Musings on the place of humor and comedy in our daily lives--and other funny things by Trina Hess. Comments welcome!
I'm too tired for this

It's after 10 pm on a day when I worked ten hours and had very little sleep last night.  The prospect of writing an entry is sickening, tiring and frustrating.  But--how can I tell people they should have a sense of humor, when I am not feeling very 'funny' and/or 'fun'?  It made me wonder:  Do we usually only use our sense of humor when we're IN a good mood initially?  Why not use our sense of humor in order to get ourselves into a better mood--or at least use it to energize ourselves?

What if we can't think of anything funny?  What if we're too tired to be creative, too scattered to be observant, too angry to be friendly and fun?  We can always remember those times when we did make someone laugh, when we were funny.  This will remind us that we are innately creative, and the fatigue and boredom are just covering up our abilities.

So I will remember how yesterday at the store, after I paid for my things with my credit card, the clerk handed me my receipt.  I asked her, "Don't I need to sign anything?"  She said, "No--not for under 25."  I said, "You mean years old?  Or dollars?"  She laughed out loud--maybe a little too hard, as the number wasn't THAT incredible, was it??.  And even as I was walking out of the store, I could hear her say to herself or the next customer, "That was good!"

I feel more energized just writing about that, just remembering it during today's activities.  A sense of humor doesn't just have an effect on others--we can use it to improve our relationship with ourselves too.
