That’s Not What I Meant!
The good thing about the election is that I can see how important it is to say what you mean. And say it quickly, in a concise way, and still be likeable. In short, to “Get Your SHINE Together!”
When one candidate said, “the economy starts from the bottom up,” pundits jumped on that as meaning that poor people are responsible for growing the economy. Or, was he really talking about small business, as opposed to (top) corporate business, building the economy?
We may never know. Because the sound bite only gave us that short comment. That’s the danger of speaking to a varied audience, and to people who don’t understand your particular viewpoint. Not everyone knows your jargon. Not everyone has been exposed to the things in life that have influenced your thinking patterns.
We may not be running for president, but we too need to speak in sound bites. Say what we mean in a concise way, and speak in a universal language that can’t be misunderstood. In effect, we need to, “Get Your SHINE Together!”
