Joke Books Verboten!
I was watching the SMArts student arts TV show that Cleveland Comedy Kitchen and I created a few years ago. We comics helped the students to create their own individual comedy bits for a show. One the students asked where he could find ideas for his act. Kitchen member JD Sidley told him to not use joke books. “Just take things from your own life. Talk about school, your favorite teacher, your least favorite teacher, your friends, your family.”
What’s so bad about joke books? Joke books are impersonal. Anyone can read a joke book, but few people can read it aloud. What’s more funny is what is real for you.
