Sheryl Roush, the writer who put us all together in Heart of a Woman in Business, hit the jackpot. She tells her story like this:”On January 13th a bus load of 43 women (and 2 men) drove from San Diego to Studio City, California for two morning tapings of the Dr. Phil Show at Paramount Studios, then over to CBS for the afternoon taping of The Price is Right at CBS Studios. Arrangements were made by Michele Dixon, The Organizing Doctor, professional organizer.
“Being proud San Diego Chargers football fans, and having just won the Division Championship… and playing the Steelers in the Playoffs, [editor's note: the Steelers won the Super Bowl] it was unanimously decided our TV Game show matching “Team Shirts” would be the CHARGERS shirts.
“Audience members are “interviewed” before the show by staff, for about 15-30-seconds. Since we had a busload, chances were good that one person would be “selected” to be on the show as a Contestant.
“It’s so LOUD in the 350-person studio you can’t hear anything…so the stage crew hold up a sign with the next Contestant’s name on it at the time it’s announced!
“Ester Berry was called as the FIRST Contestant called. Wearing her blue Chargers shirt, she did great at the bidding stand and went up on stage, and even had a chance to spin the wheel with show emcee Drew Carey.
“The show went along fine… changing of the prize sets, commercial breaks, etc., then the final Contestant was called… Sheryl Roush… seated on the TOP row in the very back! Wearing her gold Chargers shirt, she was seated in the Steelers fan section… but assertively held her own! (after all.. she proudly trains the Charger Girl cheerleaders in their speaking and interviewing skills!)
“The Charger Fans show airs on Thursday, February 26th, on CBS (Channel 8, 10:00-10:30am Pacific).”

There’s nothing more painful than watching or listening to someone trying to be someone they’re not. We’re not all Chris Rock. We’re not all Steven Wright. We all have our own style of humor. It’s the style that matches our personality.
Something reminded me of this tonight. I was watching an interview of the father of the missing Florida girl. A body language expert was analyzing the father’s speech and actions. Because his words and movements weren’t congruent, he wasn’t credible.
The very best humor is where there is a congruence in the type of humor and the type of comedian. Victor Borge wouldn’t be nearly as funny if he were wearing jeans. Other comics wouldn’t be as funny in a tuxedo. But when we draw our humor out of our own individual style and personality, we have a much better chance of being funny.
So, “Get Your SHINE Together!” and showcase your individuality!

This week’s Comedy Around the World shows us how to find humor in everything. While I was walking along the road on the way to the Mt. of Beatitudes (yes, there is a real place), I saw many interesting sights. Not the least of which was the centuries-old history. The religious significance. And–the grapefruits. There they were, growing on trees. You could (and I did) just walk up to the tree, pick the fruit and eat it. No grocery stores, no shipping, no waiting until they ripen in Florida. They were here. And I was impressed.
This kind of attention to detail is what makes observational humor unique. Many people may not have noticed the grapefruit trees. If you are from Pennsylvania, and visiting Israel in December, the trees jump out at you.
Jerry Seinfeld is a master at marveling about the mundane. He does an entire bit about the cottonball. His TV show was filled with everyday experiences that he noted, looked at differently, and made into a story line.
We can do the same. Perhaps with less fanfare and salary than Seinfeld. But we can look for humor everywhere. Just start noticing what surprises you. Build from that. One day I had my glasses on while I was in the kitchen. Suddenly I noticed the crumbs on the floor. Some pens and pencils, too. In the other room, I saw that there were cobwebs in some of the corners of the room. I had no idea! I’m not one of those clean freaks. If you go to their house, they make you take off your shoes.
If you come to my house, I just make you take off your glasses.
See what you can do to, “Get Your SHINE Together!”

Join us tonight for the Honky Tonk Comedy Variety show in Oil City, PA. This will be my debut in live theater. This time I will be pretending to do things in front of a live audience instead of a television camera. Our outstanding cast represents to me the way humor operates. We are people who range in ages from 7 to 70’s. So, what keeps us doing the long rehearsals, the repetition of lines, the whole song and dance? In a few words, COMEDY:
C: We have a shared sense of community.
O: We have one goal and that is what directs our attitudes and our actions.
M: We have mutual respect for each other, despite our differences.
E: We enjoy the experience of meeting new friends, testing our talents.
D: We are doing what is outside our comfort zone.
Y: We are saying yes to others’ ideas and imagination.
Use this handy guide to help you to, “Get Your SHINE Together!”
