Daniel Goleman, in his book, “Social Intelligence,” writes about humor and how it relates to intelligence.
–”Do you know why you can’t tell a joke?”
–”No, why ca–”
–”Your timing.”
Goleman says that good comics have a keen sense of timing. This lets them know exactly when to deliver the punchline, how to weave the set-up, and how to respond to the audience.
But you don’t have to be a stand-up comic to do this. You can develop your sense of timing by learning social cues that identify when, how, how much, and with whom to connect.
It’s that simple.
Or is it?
“Get Your SHINE Together!” and tell me how well your last joke went.
Join us March 2nd at the Corner Cafe on Southside Slopes in Pittsburgh. David Kaye and I will be serving up a night of comedy at the Monday night show. Hope to see you there! Parking is FREE! And the laughter is ABUNDANT!

Comedy is about perspective. Even mundane things can be funny, when we look at things differently than we normally do. Like taking a shower. This week’s Comedy Around the World looks at that–taking a shower. When I am traveling, I like to run in the mornings, then take a shower. I was staying at a friend’s house in Boxdorf, a suburb of Nuernberg. After a morning run on one of the many bike trails there, I wanted to take a shower. But there was no hot water in the “H” spigot knob.
I learned later that I would have to get the hot water from the sink, or boil water in a pan and pour it over myself, Little-House-On-The-Prairie style.
When I stayed with friends in Ireland, I had a similar problem. It seems that there is a knob on the hot water tank–in the hall closet–that you have to turn on if you want hot water in the shower. I learned that after another cold shower.
But the biggest surprise in perspective, I got in Israel. I was the first one awake in my host family’s house. After going running, I took a shower. Another cold shower. Well, I thought, this is Israel: they have to be tough here. So I gritted my teeth and showered. The family I was staying with was just as surprised as I was at my cold shower. It seems that they have hot water at night, and that is when people take their showers–not in the mornings!
My perspective returned to normal when I stayed with a friend and her family outside Milan, Italy. My friend knew I was weary after a long day of travel to their house. So, she ran a hot bath for me, and there was nothing funny about that!

A NEW PLAY!
Amy Hartman, Pittsburgh’s leading contemporary playwright (Mazel, The Chicken Snake) takes you on a hilarious journey through love and compulsion in her new comedy. Poor Augie; she’s so excited: held hostage in her own Texas bomb shelter by off-kilter – and clearly pregnant – Cecil; she isn’t sure whether to laugh or cry! Will she be rescued? Will she save herself? Will she and Cecil team up against her two-timing husband? Find out for yourself in the premiere of this rich, character-driven comedy!
Here is an invitation from my co-moderator at the Xing site. Please consider joining our Comedy Today group, today! It will definitely help you to, “Get Your SHINE Together!”
Hi everybody,
Comedy Today should be a group for you - something you enjoy, something that inspires, something that helps you/serves you in some way. These are my thoughts:
My name is Evelyn and I recently took over the job of group moderator from Klaus Wiesmüller. We also now have 2 co-moderators, Aurora Carragal (Spain) and Trina Hess (USA). Aurora is a theatre director and web designer and Trina is a comedian and motivational speaker. A hearty welcome to Trina and Aurora and also our two newest members Tanya (Germany) and Barry (USA).
There’s a forum where you can post your own live performances - or any comedy performances and shows you think are interesting. And If somebody sends you something funny - a joke, a clip, whatever - pls share it with us! We’d love to see it :-) Just think of all the smiles you’ll be generating around the globe …
I’ve also created a forum for suggestions, comments, observations, whatever comes to mind - you are welcome to post your thoughts.
WANTED: NEW! NEW! NEW! MEMBERS! MEMBERS! in all shapes and sizes ;-) The more the merrier! If you know anyone, lay or professional, who might enjoy the group, you can send them this link:
http://www.xing.com/group-8341.be2fbb or go to the start page of our group and send them a message from there.
That’s it for today. And if you find someone who doesn’t have a smile on their face - well just give him/her your smile :-)
Warm regards,
Evelyn

My friend Rebecca Lamperski was cited in Darren LaCroix’s newsletter, “Stage Time”. You can read more at www.humor411.com.
Here is an excerpt:
“Three years ago, one of my students gave me an absolutely profound idea for creating a new teaching tool. Rebecca Lamperski is a great speaker, and a member of Champions’ EDGE. While reviewing one of her speeches, she showed me how she looks at her speech-in-progress. It’s a powerful technique, and she gave me permission to share it with you. Thanks, Rebecca!
What if you could focus on one section — one “chunk” — at a time, rather than trying to write a whole presentation? Let’s give it a try!
To start, put each section of your speech in a box.
Next, focus on making each separate section very clear and concise.
Then, create brief, concise transitions from one section to the next!
That’s it! Simple, concise, powerful!”
Try this technique today to, “Get Your SHINE Together!”
