How To Tell A Joke: Humor as a communication tool

Posted in Humor attitude, Humor~Creativity at 7:26 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

I met with Joe Gerzina of the Riverview Intermediate Unit today to discuss my workshop, “How To Tell A Joke.”  The workshop is part of the Life After School Conference–helping students to move from high school to employment and success in life.

How can learning how to tell a joke do that?

1.  Learning the nuances of humor–tact, timing, and trendiness–will help students be perceived as a positive, rather than a toxic person.  This can improve their relationships with others and help them to succeed in life.

2.  Recognizing the social skills involved in the timing of when to use humor–that helps students to be aware of what’s going on around them.  They can step outside of themselves and listen for cues as to when to jump into the conversation, and with which jokes.

3.  Merely thinking of humorous possibilities gives students an alternative behavior.  They see that they can make choices:  They don’t have to act impulsively–instead, they can conjure up a creative, tactful, and relevant remark.

What is your favorite joke?  Share it here, www.yourshiningexample.com or you can always tweet it!  trinahess

On Being Ignorant

Posted in Humor~Technology at 8:44 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Scott The Nametag Guy says:  Be innocent and ignorant. In his post, “12 Ways to Jumpstart Your Creativity,” Scott says that curiosity, innocence and youth = creativity.  “So, even if you’re not that sweet little untainted whippersnapper anymore, your goal is to temporary suspend your adult habit of self-criticism.”

That’s what we did at our brown bag lunch topic at the Venango Chamber today.  As we discussed Twitter, we all suspended criticism.  One member even commented, “Listen–even our language has changed!”  It was true–we were talking re-tweets, discussing the benefits of having a tweetdeck, hashing out the benefits of hashtags, and even getting into ning.  Not one of us was an expert.  We were all learning.  As Scott says, “Creativity is about being uncomfortable.”

We didn’t know everything about the topic, and that was ok, too.  Scott says to, “develop your a tolerance for ambiguity. Fear only the KNOWN. Comfort zones are overrated, anyway. Take fanatical risks. Let’s get glorious! …And, be comfortable NOT knowing what something is at the beginning, trusting that you’ll figure it out when you get there. Have unshakable faith in those unplaceable thoughts that catch your inner attention. Sure, some ideas may come without any visible anchors, but they DO have a destination. How are you practicing intentional discomfort?”

“Get Your SHINE Together!” no matter how uncomfortable you are!

Small Town Starz

Posted in Humor~General at 8:36 am by Dr. Trina Hess

Here’s a note from my friend Mark Fleis.  He’s looking for votes for Zelienople, PA to host the primiere of the new X-Men movie.  Zelienople is a small town about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  When I was in grade school, some new students moved to our school district, and they were from Zelienople.  I thought it was some small country in Africa.  I was very confused, because their  English was so good. Now I know where it is, and now I know that this town has the potential to make big news–If you vote today!  Read more here:  Dear………….Well……………..Everybody:

Some of you will have seen this note more than once, for which I apologize.  The campaign is gaining more steam than I expected, so I want to let EVERYBODY in my address book know about it.  You may not live in Zelienople, or even Pennsylvania for that matter, but this is a chance to do something truly noteworthy, and your time and consideration are greatly appreciated.

Back in the day, it is rumored that Judy Garland once visited The Strand during a tour she was on to promote one of her films.  Now’s our chance to bring another major Hollywood celebrity to Zelienople.

I have learned that 20th Century Fox is sponsoring a contest where the city that gets the most votes will host the world premiere of X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Why not Zelienople??

You may think that all those big cities will have no problem generating the thousands and thousands of votes needed to win this contest.  But those cities all have a gazillion zip codes, right?  If YOU vote, and encourage everyone you know with an e-mail address to vote, we could have a shot at having Hugh Jackman and company visit the beautiful and historic borough of Zelienople and ‘wow’ them with some genuine home town hospitality.  The publicity generated by it wouldn’t hurt The Strand, of course, or Butler County Tourism for that matter.

The odds may be long, but so were the odds of getting The Strand renovated. All you have to do is go here and type in zip code 16063 along with the other information:

http://x-menorigins.com/premiere/  (Remember to type in zip code 16063!  That’s how we’ll beat out the major metro areas!)

The Strand won’t be done nearly in time for the April 27th Premiere, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it! Just getting the votes to bring in the world premiere would be a monumental win.

So Vote Early and Vote Often.  Then tell your friends to do the same thing.  Feel free to forward this note to everyone in YOUR address book.

You never know until you try!

Take Care,

Mark Fleis M.Ed.

Perspectives

Posted in Comedy Around The World at 3:58 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Happy Easter today, no matter how you celebrate it.  Some people go to sunrise church services.  Some people go to Mass.  Some just enjoy the day off work.  Some are looking for the Easter Bunny.  Many different perspectives for the same day on a calendar.

Today’s Comedy Around the World celebrates Easter in–where else–Jerusalem.  Catholics believe the events of Easter happened at what is now the ruins under a magnificent church within the Old City.  As visitors wind through the rocky, brick-lain narrow alleys, they can trace the path Jesus took on His final day.

Protestants, though, believe the sight where all of this occurred lies outside the Old City walls.  There, the Garden of Gethsamane houses a grove of old, twisted trees and an empty tomb.  A meditative atmosphere permeated the grounds as I wandered through the garden.

As one group stood in an ancient building, another stood outside. Still others today were looking for hidden eggs.

No matter what your perspective is, honor it.  Tell us about it.  Don’t neglect to examine other perspectives, but do use your perspective as the basis for your story.  And then–add humor from there.

How did you celebrate today?  Share your Easter experiences here!

What It Takes

Posted in Humor~Social Media, Humor~Technology at 7:40 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Yesterday’s article on career change and transitions mentioned networking. But it’s not networking like most of us are used to. Now it’s tinged with technology.  And to do that effectively, simply take the steps that you would for living more humorously.

1.  Find a friend–someone who is curious about technology.  Mine is Susan from the Chamber office.  This friend doesn’t have to be a techie, just has to be fearless and interested in learning new things.  Same way with humor:  latch on to someone who has a sense of humor and learn from them how to live more lightly.

2.  Don’t be afraid of making mistakes or not knowing something.  I didn’t  know how to make a tinyurl.  So what did I do?  I didn’t get a manual, or search “Help” online.  I tweeted the question and someone from the Ukraine wrote back, “Here try this.”  Sure, they may steal your identity, but you will be able to shorten your links so you can write more in the space on Twitter.

3.  Be yourself.  All comedy is based on the truth–and then we embellish.  But we tell it like it is, we tell about ourselves like we are.  If you put on a front in online networking, people will know.  People are very savvy–they’ve been exposed to this technology stuff for many years, and don’t fall for fakeness.  It’s even more important today to just be yourself.  What if you don’t have a perfect house, family, pets, job?  Write about it!  People want to hear the truth, they want to see you are human.

Who is YOUR technology tutor?  tweet me about it at trinahess and sign up today for your 1st networking session!  And while you’re at it, “Get Your SHINE Together!”

problem=opportunity

Posted in Humor attitude at 12:38 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Just read an article in “The Changing Course Newsletter”, (Lisa Tarrant, Editor; Valerie Young, Publisher www.ChangingCourse.com) about the state of the economy today.  The authors say that NOW is the best time for people who are curious.

I would add that NOW is the best time for people who have a sense of humor.

Why?

1.  Having a sense of humor lets us see the larger perspective.  We can look beyond the everyday mundane experiences in front of us.  Then we can create ideas, connect ideas, implement ideas.

2.  With a sense of humor, we can notice that problems are opportunities.  When we are not attached to the outcome of the problem or our solution to it, we can roll with the punches, and be fearless.

What is YOUR problem today?  And what will you do about it?  How funny is that?  Share your ideas here www.yourshiningexample.com contact page.  Write in the subject line:  “MY IDEA.”  Thanks for your input!

Is That How It’s Going tO bE?

Posted in Humor~Social Media, Humor~Technology at 10:02 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

As we watch the corporate world implode on it’s own weight, we wonder…Will the world of business go back to its roots in entrepreneurship?  If so, then the social and communication skills that used to be “common sense” will have to be learned, taught, and used effectively.

Just read a tweet from Twitter_Tips:

Your Top 10 Worst Twitter Tips

  1. Collect as many followers as possible and then just market yourself.
  2. Only pump out content that is going to benefit you.
  3. Crank out link after link. Conversation? Why bother?
  4. Assume everyone in the world wants your free e-book so promote the hell out it.
  5. If you’re a business, forget that you finally have a chance to connect with your customer. Sell, sell, sell.
  6. Don’t listen. There is no value in conversation.
  7. Automatically Direct Message people. They’ll never know the difference.
  8. Don’t bother replying to anyone’s replies.
  9. Only tweet your daily events, no matter how boring and uneventful they actually are. Really, your yummy sandwich experience is important.
  10. Bait and switch. Who cares? You’ll never meet the person. You can read the entire article at http://cli.gs/6qvv07

Pill Poppers

Posted in Humor attitude at 8:17 pm by Dr. Trina Hess

Speaking of different perspectives (like yesterday’s blog entry), I spent the day with my friend Ozlem. She’s from Cyprus–where they don’t have pills for all your ills.

She mentioned that, “It’s funny–here they tell you, ‘Are you fat?  Don’t worry about it, take this pill and you will be half your size.’  ‘Are you depressed?  Don’t worry, take this pill you’ll be happy.’”

How many times do I even notice these ads, much less pay attention to them?  But when you’re an outsider in the culture, everything stands out for you.  It is noticeable, because it is so different from what you’re used to.  That makes it easier to make funny comments about all the new things you see.

Oz said it would be good for me to take a trip to Turkey.  Why?  The reason?  “You are very white and you have colorful eyes.”  Forget about the ancient cultural relics there, the outstanding food and friendly people–just go, they need to see more pale people there.  That is reason enough for me!

What is YOUR perspective?  How funny is THAT?  “Get Your SHINE Together!”
